How it works

From a barrister’s case to a ranking, in four steps.

handyside.legal is used wherever there is an internet connection: on trains, at home and in chambers. Each step is done once, by the person best placed to do it, and it takes a great deal less time than the traditional methods.

Step 1 · Barristers

Barristers enter their own cases and referees.

Each member signs in to your chambers’ own portal and adds cases and referees in their own time, on whatever is to hand: a desk in chambers, a laptop at home, a phone on the train.

They see their own work and no one else’s. The person who knows the case best writes it up, once.

  • Each barrister sees only their own cases and referees.
  • Works on a phone, with a dark mode.
  • Sign-in with a Microsoft account is coming.

Step 2 · Admins

Admins review, select and keep everything in order.

Your marketing team, practice managers or our own consultants see what has come in, practice area by practice area. They check each case, tick what goes forward, and keep practice areas, members and the rankings history up to date.

For a larger set, practice-area admins can be given just their own areas.

  • Everything for a practice area in one place: cases, referees, members.
  • Tick what goes forward; leave the rest for another year.
  • Practice-area admins see just the areas they are given.

Step 3 · At a click

Submissions and referee spreadsheets, generated.

When the selection is ready, handyside.legal produces the submission and the referee spreadsheet for Chambers & Partners and for The Legal 500, each in the directory’s own format.

No cutting and pasting between Word and Excel, and no keying errors. Your team spends its time on the writing: edit the copy, not the data.

  • Both directories, from the same reviewed data.
  • Every practice area, every guide, at a click.
  • What reaches the directories is what your members wrote.
Generating. One practice area, both directories.Names are fictional.
Step 4 · Year on year

Rankings, kept year on year.

When the guides are published, the results are kept against each barrister and each practice area. You can see what moved and where, for the set and for every member.

And next year’s campaign starts from this one, not from a blank page.

  • Per barrister and per practice area.
  • Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500 both kept.
  • The history stays with the set.

Who does what

Everyone sees their part, and only their part.

A chambers is not one team. The portal is arranged around the people who actually do the work, with access drawn to match.

The platform

The fourth iteration, rebuilt from the ground up.

handyside.legal has been in use for many years. In 2026 it was rebuilt on a new platform, and the first chambers are already working on it.

  • A portal of your ownEach chambers has its own private portal, on its own domain.
  • An isolated databaseYour set’s data is held apart. Nothing is shared between chambers.
  • Fast, and on a phoneQuick to use on a desktop, a laptop or a phone, with a dark mode for late evenings.

Your time, better spent

However you spend the time you save, it will not be wasted.

That special project you promised to deliver? A new idea that will gain you recognition inside chambers and out? Or just relaxing. We are not here to judge, just to help you save the time.
